On Wednesday night, AMS Council went over executive committee motions.
Here’s what you might have missed.
Council rejects BoG and Senate report code changes
Council voted on a code change presented by the Governance Committee, which would have prompted the Board of Governors and Senate representatives to give verbal updates at meetings.
At the moment, only written reports are required.
Multiple councillors raised concerns over the code changes.
VP Academic and University Affairs Kamil Kanji expressed concern this will cause meetings to run longer than needed and he did not think verbal updates were necessary.
Student governor Eshana Bhangu said she also thought this change seemed unnecessary.
The motion failed as two-thirds majority was not reached. The official vote was 4 in favour, 10 against, and 1 abstention.
Goodbye PC5
Next, the council moved on to vote to rescind Policy 5: Campus Safety Vision Statement.
Passed in 2006 then reviewed in 2009, the policy states that the campus should be a space free from any “physical harm, hostility, aggression, harassment, and devaluation.”
Kanji said the policy does not reflect current situations.
President Esmé Decker added things in PC5 were already covered in other policies and it is not "up to caliber" to other policies.
The motion to rescind PC5 passed with 11 votes in favour and 1 abstention.
Bapty to EPA
The AMS appointed engineering councillor Rowan Bapty to the newly formed Executive Performance and Accountability (EPA) Committee. The EPA Committee is responsible for ensuring AMS executives adhere to their responsibilities.
